Obama wins!

I had the opportunity to cover history last night as America elected it's first African American to the presidency. I and fellow photographer Josh Peckler decided at the last minute Tuesday afternoon to make the four hour trip up to Chicago to cover this defining moment in our history. It was an amazing evening filled with anxiousness, laughing, cheering, and tearing up as the people in Grant Park watched Obama sweep across the electoral map to claim victory. Here are some of my images from the night.

Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton continue to battle over the Democratic presidential nomination, and that battle has recently been brought to Muncie Indiana. In two weeks, I have had the opportunity to cover both candidate's campaign stops, and it's been quite exciting. From the security to the cheering crowds, to the candidate's powerful speeches, it's been a unique experience for me. Here are some of my photos.

Blackhawk Ride!

I spent an awesome Saturday covering a day three of a four day training exercise for area ROTC at Camp Atterbury. I had a blast hanging around with Major Cummins and various ROTC cadets seeing what they do during their training, and one of those fun things happened to be going up in a blackhawk helicopter.

I was a bit nervous at first since the doors were open during the entire flight, but once we were in the air, I was glad since it allowed for a much nicer view. It did make for a cold flight though. The most exciting part was when they banked at what I'm assuming was almost 80 or so degrees. It felt like I would fall right out!

The photos aren't great, but I just had boast! More photos from the day are soon to follow.

Fashion Shoot

I had a pretty interesting time yesterday during my first fashion shoot. Since I'm not used to posing people at all, I'm glad I had help from several people (Mags, Laura and Jen). All in all, I'm pleased with the way it turned out.

The idea was to create high fashion photography focused on what people should and should not wear to to job interviews. Also big thanks to the models who made the photos look awesome -- Jason, Ashley, Carl, Maeghan, and David.

Getting close to the action

Often times a photojournalist is lucky enough to shoot an event where he can get right up next to the action. Such was the case today (as you can so obviously tell from the gunk on my lens). I had a good time photographing the kids of Just Us Kids Outdoors as the slid down a hill at Glen Miller Park with the assistance of one of the Richmond Fire Department's fire truck and water hose.

And of course, last, but certainly not least, the frame that I thought was going to kill my camera. Fortunately, my camera is a durable beast and survived the blast. Now it just needs a little (lot) of cleaning.

I shot the surprise retirement party for Ed Eby, the music director of First English Lutheran Church. I tried something new for this photo. I typically try to shoot away from widows that are going to blow part of the photo completely out, but after being influenced by a few photographers on the internet, I decided to see if I could work that overexposure to my advantage. I'm quite happy with the way it turned out.

As a journalist trying to capture people naturally in their environments, it's always annoying when people see me and act differently or look at the camera. It part of the job, and I'm used to it, but it's not something that I like. However, there is an exception for just about everything. Today was one of those days.

I was shooting a charity golf outing and came across this group of four guys and shot some photos. When I was editing them down, I found this photo and it immediately brought a smile to my face. I'm not even sure why. I only wish the guy on the right was doing something, but the photo looks awkward with him and the cart cropped out.

Another event used to celebrate Jewish Heritage Week was the hookah on Lafallette Feild. This was a lot of fun to shoot, but definitely a challenge. The event started two hours late, so I no longer had the sun for backlight, so I decided to try to use two flashes. I hardly ever use flash, and this was my first time ever using two. It worked for about 20 mintues, and suddenly the slave stopped firing. I wasn't sure what to do, so I just went on shooting.

Israeli Folk Dancing

Shot a great feature assignment today. There was a special lesson being taught on Isreali folk dancing by an extremely funny and enthusistic instructor -- Ya'akov Eden. He's originally from Israel and was able to add a lot of informative information about each of the dances he taught. It looked like so much fun that I almost joined in, but there were still some different photos and angles that I wanted to get. Perhaps I'll forgo the shooting duties next time and join in.

Speakers, love 'em or hate 'em... wait a sec, what photographer loves to photograph speakers? I assume you can tell where this is heading. I had an assignment yesterday to photograph three authors reading excerpts from their first books. All three of these authors were quite interesting, but taking photos of someone reading does not make the most interesting photograph, therefore, I tried to spice it up as best as I could.

Here's the result. Will it run in the paper? Probably not, but I came away from a mundane assignment with something that I'm happy with (and something that my editors can be happy with as well).

Over spring break, I was expecting to shoot 4-5 freelance assingments for the local paper, the Palladium-Item. Unfortunately, there wasn't much happening in Richmond that week, so I ended up shoot one assingment instead. But, I did get to start my environmental portrait shoot for my intr0-photojournalism class.

I decided to go photography my dad and uncle seeing as how they own an auto body repair shop that has quite a bit of character. I spent a few hours with them, and here is my favorite shot. (By the way, this is my uncle, Tom).

Student Government Association

Today was the last day for students to vote for Student Government Association (SGA) and also the day results were announced. I ended up hanging out with the team that ultimately lost. I got to their "headquarters" around 6:00 and everybody was really friendly with me -- joking around and the like. An hour later when it was announced that they lost, it was a whole other story. It was kind of awkward because people were turning away, trying to hide their tears, but I made a few photos.

Twelve hour dance-a-thon

I shot a twelve hour dance-a-thon that was being put on last night to help raise money for Riley Children Hospital in Indianapolis. It looked like everybody was having a great time. Anyway, here's the one photo that I really liked.

Ball State wins the MAC West

Shot the Ball State womens basketball team's last home game today against Eastern Michigan. It was one of the best basketball games I've seen in quite some time. Ball State was ahead by two points for much of the second half and with a little under a minute left on the clock, Eastern Michigan sunk a 3 pointer. With 3.8 seconds remaining, Ball State gained the lead to win the Mid-American Conference West Division championship.

On top of that, there was record-breaking number of fans that showed up to watch the game. All in all, a great game.

College snow day...? Great!

Today was a great day for two reasons. There was so much snow today that classes were cancelled which meant that I had the entire day to spend outside in the snow making photos. It was like shooting spot news and features the entire day, which makes for a great deal of fun.

I started shooting at 12 and stopped at 5. In that time, I shot people playing snow football, having snowball fights, sledding, and trying to make their way through 1-4 foot snow drifts. Along the way, I trudged through snow that came up past my knees and walked nearly a mile into the 30mph wind that was blowing both snow and freezing rain in my face (that really stung by the way).

All in all, it was a great day!

Coaches prove to be more fun than game

I shot one of the longest basketball games of my life tonight. There were so many turnovers and fouls, it was unbelievable. Fortunately, when teams play really poorly, the coaches tend to get upset when the smallest thing happens. Tonight was no different. Here are some of my shots from the game.

None of these ran in the paper unfortunately. It's always upsetting when your photos don't run, but in this case, it doesn't bother me much. My photos didn't run because the two other photographers at the game shot better photos (this kind of competition is what drives us to shoot better!). There better photos should run. It's only really upsetting when your photos get turned over for shit. That really bites.

My Most Difficult Assignment to Date

Last Wednesday, I had the hardest assignment I've ever had. I was asked to photograph the funeral of 19 year-old Travis Smith. Smith was a freshman who had died in a car accident a few nights before.

The family had given us (reporter and I) permission to be there and also wanted us there so that we could tell Travis' story, celebrate his life, and show that many people loved him. Since that was the case, I didn't feel guily taking the photos, but it's still extremely difficult to photograph the grieving of friends and family who have lost someone at such a young age.

Here are some of my photos from Smith's funeral. 1000 people filled the church to standing room only during the service.

Smith was a member of the Ball State Men's Golf team, and at the service, the team circled around the casket and presented Smith's parents with a letter jacket.

The First Week Back

They were both a lot of fun since I shot either one before. I've shot volleyball, but I my photos, overall, were much better than what I have ever got when shooting womens volleyball.

Break is Over

I've been shooting a bit over break, but not a lot. I've done three or four basketball games and New Year's celebrations, but been taking it easy for the most part. Here is favorite shot from break. I had hoped they would run this photo, but I wasn't holding my breath... and they didn't suprise me. I guess when you've got a game story, you run action not feature. Oh well, I came away with something that I was somewhat happy with.

I really wish I had been faster and could have been over there with my wide. Next time I'll remember!

Tuba Concert

I shot a Tuba-Euphonium concert last night. The musicians were no doubt very talented, but I honestly did not care for the sound that 25 tubas and euphoniums created. The sound seemed to mesh completely together. But, I did get one photo that I was fairly happy with.

It's been a while, but here are some of the stories I've shot over the last month.

First off here two photos I shot for a Veteran's Day story for the Pal-Item.

Next are two photos I shot of a car race at local church -- also for the Pal-Item.

Here are two photos from an Earlham football game that were also shot for the Pal-Item.

Now back to stuff that I've shot for the school. Here's a photo that I shot at the Democratic HQ when the Democratics swept the election in Deleware County. I took about 400 photos, but this was my favorite. It's of State Representative elect Dennis Tyler getting hugged by his wife and daughter. It didn't run in the paper, but I liked it.

Next are a couple of photos from a really interesting interactive art exhibit that was at the Ball State Art Museum.

Up next are two images from a story the paper did on a loacl belly dancing school. This was a lot fun too.

Last but not least are a few photos from a girls basketball game I shot yesterday at Butler University. My favorite one is of the coach just pointing at the ref after making what she thought was bad call.

The Organ

I shot my ass off this week. I'm not entirely sure how I ended up shooting so much, but I did. It was lots of fun, but at the same time, extremely tiring. I shouldn't really complain though as my editor probably worked twice as hard since he was given so much to do as well.

Monday I shot Homecoming Kickoff, Tuesday it was the Talent Search program, Wednesday I actually had off, Thursday was Air Jam, Friday was Bed Races and the Alumni Homecoming dinner, and Saturday was the parade (9:30 am!!) and the football game. So, yeah, I stayed busy. Here are some of my favorite shots from the week. I didn't do as well at some of the events as I had hoped, so not every event made the cut.

I felt pretty sorry for my editor this day. He had an awesome shot, but it didn't run because the designers felt it would print too dark. It's not that he underexposed the shot, it's just what made it up was determined to be too dark to run in the paper. So they ran some of my rather mediocre shots instead. There were two that I like however. The first one is of the two performers that won the competition. The second is one that only I liked. My editor didn't like it and neither did anyone else. But this isn't the paper, this is my blog, so I'm running it here. Chances are you won't like it either. :)

Bed Races

This was actually a lot of fun. I also came away with three photos that I'm fairly happy with (a rarity to be sure), so I guess this event was the highlight of Homecoming.

The Symphony

I was able to make it over to Sursa the other night and hear the Ball State Symphony Orchestra play. They were actually very good, much better than I had expected. I snapped about 20 photos. I always feel strange taking photos during orchestra concerts. The music is so delicate and the CLANK of the shutter can be very distracting. I always try to be respectful and shoot only during the louder moments, but at the same time I have a job to do and when an image strikes me, sometimes I just have to push that shutter...

A New Sport!

It's always fun to cover a new sport for the first time. You never quite know what to expect or how to shoot it. Well, today my new sport turned out to be field hockey. The one thing that I was continually troubled with was whether to shoot vertically or horizontally. Most sports are either predominantly vertical (soccer) or horizontal (swimming). Of course each has exceptions. With field hockey though, I kept switching between the two, it felt rather odd to tell the truth.

But enough with that, here are my two best shots.

So, after being in school for over 7 weeks and taking over 6000 shots, I'm finally genuinely happy with a photo. Maybe I'm harder on myself than I should be, but the only way I'm going to improve is if I and my editors are hard on me and continue to push me to shoot better and think more about what I'm doing. I think I accomplished that in this shot.

The Power of Sunlight

So I also shot some photos of architecture students Chelsea Wait and Austin Durban. They were building some models of classrooms. Once they were finsihed building them, they were going to take them down to a big machine called a heliodon which recreates sunlight. They use this so they can understand the effects of sunlight when designing buildings. Pretty neat. Too bad I didn't get to see the heliodon.

Went to a model/dance tryout at the very last minute today. Left at around 9:00 and got back around 10:00. I have two photos that are "OK". I could have made some really nice photos, but I just didn't nail like I should have. There were opportunities for some great shots, but I just didn't work it well enough. Better luck next time right?

9/11 Memoiral Concert

I shot a Septmeber 11 memorial concert last night at First Presbyterian Church. It featured an interesting array of musical talent. It had jazz, classical solos, choral music, organ, etc. I love orchestral/choral music, but for some reason none of the music really appealed to me. It was performed wonderfully by the musicians, so that did't have anything to do with it. Perhaps it is because I was there taking photos and wasn't paying as much attention if I was just listening to the music.

I upset one guy quite a bit by taking photos during the performance. He told me I was being disrespectul to both the performers and audience members. He told me that I should either move all the way to the back of the church with a telephoto lens (I already had my telephoto on by the way) or leave. I said I was trying to be as respectful as possible, but I wasn't going to leave... I've got a job to do.

Although this didn't really upset me too much (I mean hey, I was treatened with death once), I was a bit peeved because I really was trying to be respectful to the people around me. I know the 20d's shutter is entirely too loud (especially in a large church) and because of that I wasn't shooting as much as I might normally. I woudn't want to hear that constantly while trying to listen to music. So here I am trying to be respectful and this guy tells me I'm doing a piss poor job (my words, not his).

Fandemonium Pandemonium

So Indiana University beat Ball State University tonight 24-23. That sucks. When I'm not shooting, I honestly could care less who wins (I'm just not a big sports enthusist), but when I'm shooting the game, I'll always want Ball State to win. Especially during a big game such as this. The craziness in that stadium would have been taken to a whole new level. I was really looking forward to the jubilation of the crowd.

However, I came away with a few good shots.

On a side note, some drunk idiot pissed on my shoes while I was shooting tailgating. Needless to say, that was not fun. It's probably the most disgusting thing that has ever happened to me actually. I've been needing to get new shoes for a while now. I suppose I should be lucky those weren't new shoes....

David is Deaf

This week was not the greatest in terms of what I shot. I wasn't really happy with anything that I had taken. Luckily yesterday, I came away with four or five shots that I'm pretty happy with. However, there's always room for improvement.

Last night I shot a concert in the Student Center. There were four bands performing, and although I didn't really care for the music (just not my cup of tea), I had a good time playing around with angles and lighting. Big thanks to Will V for letting me use his 50mm f/1.8. Unfortunately, I liked the lens so much that I'll probably end up buying one for myself before too long.

Concerning the title: You've probably figured it out, but the music was so loud that I really had trouble hearing for an hour or so after I left. I'm just not used to that kind of music you know?

Tonight is the IU vs. BSU football game.... that should be fun. Until then, I think it's time I knuckle down and finish my English paper.....

Missed Opportunity

I was walking around campus and saw a guy with a parrot on his shoulder. It was one of those double take moments where I just didn't believe my eyes the first time around. Unfortunately, all I can do is tell you about it... I have nothing to show you. :(

The Old and the New

So, I shot my first college football game Thursday night. Suffice to say, it was awesome. The atmosphere was completely different to that of high school football (in Richmond anyway). Unfortunately, I shot shitty action the entire night, but I came away with one fan shot that I'm pretty happy with. I didn't notice this shot when I was editing for the paper and used two "ehh they're alright photos" instead. They aren't terrible, but they aren't great either. Like I said though, I'm happy with the one above.

Fast forward to Friday night, and I'm back in Richmond shooting a high school game. I got better action this time, still not great, but an improvement anyway. Near the end of the first half, a rainbow popped up, and I tried numerous angles to try to make it look interesting, but I never quite got "it". However, I did shoot this one of the coach looking at his players with the really cool clouds.

Finding fabulous features

I got a call from Rob, the photo editor, today at around 6:00. He had shot a feature photo earlier in the day, but we needed one or two more. I wasn't busy, so I said I'd walk around campus and see what I could find. We've done this four or five times so far (once because there actually wasn't anything artwise for the front page and the other times just to shoot stuff), and it's a lot harder than it sounds. You really have to keep your eye out for interesting things that are going on, or figure out how to make mundane things look interesting.

Anyway, I had been walking around for about 30 min and hadn't really found anything. Then I came across a group of guys playing football. Not the most interesting thing, but I shot it just so that I would have something to fall back on. Although I was pretty sure they wouldn't use since the first home football game is tomorrow night.

So I left those guys and headed over to Lewellen Pool. As I was walking through the hall, I saw outisde the window there was a group of three students who were looking and feeling trees and were taking down notes. Hmmm.... that could be interesting, so I went to see what they were up to.

Turns out they are 3rd year landscape architecture students. They are in a class called -- get this -- Plants. By the end of the semester they have to be able to identify over 200 types of plants around campus! Reconsidering

After going through my entire shoot with my Daily News editor, I have to agree with him that this shot was the strongest of the bunch. Since he's pretty tough on me (he could definitely be tougher though), I've already learned quite a bit since being here. I'm looking forward to taking my photography to the next level, out of the relm of the strait foward shot that I'm used to. I'm looking foward to developing my own eye and see this world differenly. Unfortunatley, I did not get these guy's names because I didn't think at the time it was a good photo. I now know that I need to get the name of *just about* everybody that I shoot.

I've got the feeling that I'm going to learn a lot this year, and I sure as hell can't wait!

Saturday Morning

It's not often that I get up at 7:30 on a Saturday morning, but that's exactly what I did today. I had a volleyball game to shoot at 10:00. Granted, I didn't really have to get up anywhere near that early to get there on time, but I have a routine in the morning that involves showering, eating, checking email and just checking a few other things online, so that all had to be done before heading out.

Anyway, I was at the volleyball game form 1.5-2 hours and on my way back to edit them, I passed a water/mud/carnival type event being put on by the Theta Chi fraternatity, so I had to stop by for some photos. It turns out that they were putting on this event to help raise money for Riley Children's Hospital.

Currently listening to: Mark Isham's score to "Life as a House".
